I Am a Delicate Flower That DOESN'T Need Your Protection

It's been a while since I pissed everyone off, so I thought I'd share my latest insight into why so many feminists (though not feminism) are stupid.

Shakesville is all upset 'cause, OMG HETERO-NORMATIVE JEWELRY COMMERCIAL!

But what I don't get is, if it's so bad to present "women being scared little girls who need men to put their strong arms around them in thunderstorms" then how the fuck do you explain this?

I am insular, oversensitive shut-in. Hear me roar!

Seriously, if you don't want to advance patriarchal stereotypes, stop being such a fucking patriarchal stereotype.

Oh, and, trigger alert.

heh, indeed.

I'm so glad someone else on the Internet finds the whole "trigger alert" phrase ridiculous and obnoxious.

As for Shakesville...I stopped reading after one of the posters there wrote a diatribe about misogyny in a damn "Hagar the Horrible" comic strip. Looking over I see that it's gone downhill from there, if this is any indication.

So if I'm not a regular on Shakesville, am I allowed to be disgusted by the incredibly stupid and patronizing jewelry commercial?

Trigger warning/alert? WTF?

I don't think it's nearly as annoying as the ones that play on men's guilt by implying their wife/girlfriend will think they don't love them unless he blows a huge chunk of cash on something sparkly.

Well, that and diamonds and all the stupid myths surrounding them in general are annoying.

There's so much annoying to go around, how can one choose?

I want to complain about the man-made colored stones and boring designs of the jewlery.

There, there, Susan. Come to my arms. Stick with me and I'll make sure you never have to (or be able to afford to) look at any jewelry ever again.

Meanwhile, what bulbul said.

Rape.

There, I triggered someone. I should have warned you that I was going to do that.

It's basically a thing where you have to act like all your potential readers have PTSD and you can't mention whatever caused it without being a hater.

And, yes, this post is not to say that you can't hate Kay Jewelry commercials.

The problem with trigger alert is that if you are that traumatized, your entire life is a trigger alert. The amount of abuse in the world is horrific but it's a lot bigger than some Americans and what we read in the media.

The solution is to end child abuse and fighting patriarchy is, literally, half the story. Sexist behavior is an attempt to reinforce gender roles imposed via abuse. Your parents treat you badly so you think you are a horrible person so you want someone to look down on. Men on women, whites on blacks (including women of course), blacks on gays, you name it--every abused, self-hating person out there tries to put down someone else.

I believe that we are familiar with that behavior here on "get someone fired"

Oh piffle. We want someone fired for cause, and because we have standards. And if you don't agree with me you're an inferior idiot and should be fired.

Susan of Texas said...

Well, sometimes you have to throw someone who is hurting everyone else off the bus, as McArdle would be the first to admit.

Susan,

Yes, exactly. Now I can understanding having "trigger warnings" or "alerts" if one was, say, posting a movie clip portraying an explicit rape scene or even just sharing a very graphic article on child molestation.

But some of the uses I've seen people like the Shakesville posters put it to are just so bizarre that it's hard to think it's not a deliberate parody. I mean, one of them posted "TRIGGER WARNING" because they were showing a film clip that has a woman that's frightened and upset! Seriously, if that destroys your mental equilibrium than you should be setting up some intensive counseling, not reading feminist blogs.

Coincidentally, teabagger blogs use a similarly-named system for articles about Obama.

I think my opinion of Shakes peaked when I read a discussion on how "real progressives" shouldn't use the Teabagger description because theoretically people could be forced to teabag someone. You know, because they do that on X-box Live. I just can't keep that level of outrage and concern going for more than a few... seconds.

Mr Wonderful, I love you for doing the "quote inside a quote" thing properly.

It's strange--when I saw that women are reluctant to criticize women, I didn't see that as feminist, I just saw as a yawning gap just aching to be filled with fan fiction and snark.
