McMegan is awful, just awful, but at least she's no longer employed by The Atlantic. Still, no one can read her every day and live, so we've all but given up trying. Let's just be glad her upwards failure has leveled off.

That's probably one of my biggest peeves about her writing - the "why be precise and say something with ten words when you can be redundant with 50?" approach. Then again, she can be really, really condescending, so there's a chance she actually thought she needed to explain the definition of "luck" to her readers.
I know. It's not even redundancy so much as... inexplicable stupidity? WTF?
It just makes no sense!
It does if you think you're a talented and insightful genius like she does. Sociology 1A/9th grade economics insights mixed with overly wordy, thesaurus heavy language. I'd skip it entirely if it weren't just morbid that she gets paid by the Atlantic for it.
Luck implies favorable results; random chance is , well, random. How are the two similar? Wotta maroonette.
