Holy Fucking Shit, the Source of All Dark Matter is Megan McArdle's Heart

Megan talks about the homeless in this post. This is ordinarily a post in which I'd set a new world record in profanities per second, but the sheer, unadulterated cruelty, coldness, lack of perspective or empathy that she lays out for all to see has just stricken me of my ability to even think.

I used to believe that, deep down, all people are good. Megan has permanently convinced me otherwise. Here's a few quotes that illustrate her views of the chronically homeless:

The chronically homeless are not, as fable would have it, people who have had some hard luck. They are people who have repeatedly made bad decisions--mentally ill people who stop taking their medicine, drug addicts and drunks.
Yes, she just said the mentally ill make "bad decisions" which is kind of like saying a baby makes "bad decisions" by crapping its pants and putting every random object in its mouth.
For many people (including me) giving someone an apartment as a reward for refusing to deal with their drug addiction violates our inherent sense of fairness. And for many bleeding hearts (including me) simply giving someone an apartment without forcing them to get help for their underlying conditions violates our inherent sense of mercy. We don't want them to just have a roof over their heads; we want them to stop drinking themselves to death and/or hearing voices.
It's so unfair!!!!! Why won't those schizophrenics just stop hearing voices already? Megan manages never to hear any voices at all (like the voice of reason or conscience) without even trying. Why should those lucky lunatics get all the fun?
But people on the street are people who have refused help, or can't, for whatever dark psychological reason, use it. And they are people who cost a phenomenal amount of money when they get one of the many diseases inherent in sleeping on the street. How much money are we willing to pay to maintain our sense of fairness?
Yes, mental illness is a "dark" thing, and the mentally ill are a source of pure evil in the world. Also, most people think it's totally fair to just leave them out on the street cause, hey, they could just "stop hearing voices" if they really wanted to.
Yes, I know, the hardcore libertarians are protesting that we shouldn't pay for their medical care.
This is how she describes people with whom she chooses to associate herself. She admits that her brethren want people rotting on the street.
... because a majority of Americans are horrified by the idea of letting someone die outside the hospital door.
True, this is what's known as having a bare minimum of a soul. It's actually a good thing, despite Megan's attempts to portray it otherwise.
But the homeless are already people with extreme disregard of social norms and also, personal suffering. Unless we're actually willing to let them die, and I hope we aren't, we don't have any leverage.
Don't you love how she tries to make herself sound compassionate here by hoping that we won't "let them die." She fails to realize that you can't make even the slightest pull for being a decent human being when you call the mentally ill "people with extreme disregard for social norms." THEY'RE FUCKING SICK. They're not disregarding anything. They lack the capacity TO REGARD AT ALL. What the fuck is wrong with her?

This women has managed to make me actually despise her. I used to just hate her ideas. I used to simply think that she was misinformed, short-sighted, and narcissistic. I now see that she's completely evil. She views human life in terms of dollars and cents. It has no inherent value on its own for her. She actually seems to think that the mentally ill choose to be insane.

I'm with brad. I wish I were a woman so that I could punch her in the face. Hell, if I ever saw her in person I don't even know if societal gender roles could stop me from beating the crap out of her any longer. This person is human filth. I hope she ends up on the streets someday.

This horrible display of inhumanity really makes me question whether or not I can keep this gig up. If I keep seeing evil like this, I might start thinking people are just as worthless as Megan thinks they are.

Megan's problem is that her libertarian world view demands that she see everything in black and white and believe that every problem has some simple, universal solution. She clearly views the homeless the same way she does the poor: a monolithic group of people all existing under the same circumstances for the same reasons. You'd think she'd want to maybe look into some statistics or data about the homeless before pontificating on the reasons for their travails.

Not all homeless are alcoholics (not "drunks," Megan. That's a epithet. You're writing about people with a stinking *disease* that needs treatment, you dumb, insensitive moron), addicts, or mentally ill. Not everyone in the world has a daddy on the Upper West Side who can rescue them when they inevitably make bad decisions, the way all human beings do at one time or another.

And look up the word "inherent" in the dictionary, Megan. Fairness and mercy are not inherent. They are qualities taught through the process of rearing people to be civilized. Indeed, there are those who possess little or none of either.

She's a piece of shit. She really is. But she will never, never, never be able to see this.

True, to Megan any indigntion will just be leftist bias.

I'd say she should be dragged out into the sunlight to expose her soulessness, but she'd burst into flame.

Imagine what its like to be Megan. Everything has an answer devoid of actual thought and emotion. She's put a plastic sheet over her swimming pool brain and can skip along that path saying I'm thinking I'm thinking because the waters moving. But she never gets wet. Stays dry and as a bone, and gets to to feel oh so superior to those who really have to get down into the water and try and find some real truth.

My brain froze like a crashed computer when I saw that she really thinks the mentally ill, even paranoid schizophrenics, should be held accountable for not seeking or accepting treatment.

I can only imagine, say, Megan McArdle's Suicide Hotline. "So you're a diagnosed bipolar and you decided to stop taking medication because it became too expensive and you thought it stifled your creativity? Well, whatever happens is on your head!"

Oh, and this:

The chronically homeless are not, as fable would have it, people who have had some hard luck.

Besides how illogical *and* offensive calling this a "fable" is, it really does seem like, as with most hardcore Libertarians, that the idea that someone can make bad choices and be the victims of poor circumstances *at the same time* is beyond Megan's comprehension.

Chad,

Well, writing as someone with bipolar disorder, I do think that stopping one's medication because it "stifles creativity" is a bullshit reason, and when the tricky balance of effective medications is achieved few sufferers feel diminished. When folks with "hard" bipolar stop taking their meds for reasons other than high cost, it's usually because they miss the euphoric high mania induces, a loss they wouldn't feel if their treatment were effective. I know you don't mean to, but citing the fear of a lost muse as an understandable reason for ceasing medication perpetuates a myth that keeps a lot of us away from treatment.

And yes, McArdle is an ignorant fucking twat.

Damn. As a mental case who just got off "the streets," at least for a month or two, I feel I should add to the chat here. But its been well covered. Maybe I'll read McArdle's whole pile of poo before typing anything further.

Clem,

I agree and to be honest I now think I should have stopped with "can't afford the meds" (especially given Megan's views on the government acting to make medication available to the poor). I only brought it up because it's a concern I've often heard; I didn't mean to perpetuate a myth.

(And I should probably say I'm bipolar too - and someone who once suffered a nervous breakdown to boot - so I found Megan's inhumanity especially enraging today).

Well, what should we call ourselves, the People's Anti-Suicide Bi-Polar Frat of Left Blogistan? Thanks for chiming in again, Chad, and I'm sorry for our shared troubles. My experience has been diametrically opposed to the myth: Post-treatment, my muse has thawed out. Our dark muse, however, is an ignorant fucking twat, and her flagrant stupidity is now so comprehensive that calling for her firing seems a minor ambition. She deserves to be keelhauled, repeatedly, then denied medical coverage when the PTSD kicks in.

Guys, as MM's counterpart here I feel I must remind you that the only medical problems of which we're allowed to speak are mine.

That is all.

Honestly, sorry to hear about your problems. It's awesome to hear you guys speaking about it so openly, though. As the son of a psychiatrist, I'm very sick of the stigma associated with mental ill-ness. I'm glad to see you're not afraid to talk about your medical problems. Hopefully we can get people to realize that you're not a bad person just cause you're "crazy." (I mean in general, not you two. whateve.r I'm rambling.)

And while we're on the subject, why can't dark people just lighten up? /rimshot

She really is devoid of a human soul.

Banality of Evil, indeed.

Yep, she's a real piece of work, no doubt about it.

I suspect unconsciously she knows damn well that she's even more of a parasite then the grubby guy on the sidewalk trying to sell some used goods off of a ratty old blanket; at least HE lets you see just what you're getting up-front & is likely willing to haggle on the price.

Her "product" is both pathetic & of no discernible value, & goes for an obscenely inflated price.

A month of sleeping rough would straighten her little head right out - if she survived, I mean.

Couldn't happen to a nicer ghoul.
