Attempt or Contempt? You Decide

Thus types McArdle:

Liberals wonder why they are parodied as out-of-touch secularists who mix near-total ignorance of traditional Christianity with a seething, idiotic attempt.
"Attempt" at what, exactly, Megan? Common sense & rationality? Who is more "out-of-touch" than those who take as literal truth the myths & legends of thousands of yrs. ago? Is "traditional" Xianity composed of the fundamentalist wackjobs to whom Douthat referred (in the link McM provided) as "minor-league kooks, obscure bloggers and chain-email peddlers?" And for all those trad Xians, if they don't swallow the holy book whole (Book of Revelation & all) why do they believe any of it?

Great Gobs of Goo, don't Ross & Megan realize how stupid most people are? What's the polled percentage who still believe that Sen. Obama is a Moooslim? Do they think that all the "traditional" Xians are rejecting the possibility of Barack The Anti-Christ out of hand?

Alternate (Sensible) Universe version:
God-Squadders wonder why they are parodied as ignorant backwoods doofuses who mix abysmal ignorance of reality & truth with seething idiotic contempt for those wiser than they.
The post drew 201 comments, which may indicate something. Like how nutty Xians are.

Traditional Christianity? Fuck that. There ain't nothing traditional about all of that end times antichrist tribulation bullshit. It's just some shit some wacko cooked up back in the 19th century. You want traditional Christianity? Thomas Aquinas, bitch! Ain't nothing in there about rapture.

You want traditional Christianity, see Francisco de Assisi, a rich man--in a position not unlike that of the dilettante dipshit off-spring of Bar & Poppie--who gave his wealth to the poor and went among them in generosity and love...

Yeah, fucking RIGHT....

If the sort of "Christianity" we've been seeing lately had anything to do with traditional Christianity - you know, like in the Gospels? - we wouldn't have such a problem with it, anyway. I don't recall the Biblical passage that says, "Cast the first stone at anyone who is a liberal or a Democrat," although it appears to be the whole of the New American Christian creed.

Ah, we must discuss Xianity to bring the masses here. So noted.

Well, there's plenty of progressive / liberal Christian folk out as disgusted by the 'Christian' right as you are. AFAIK noone's managed to corner that market yet, you could give it a try.
