Misplaced Anger

Megan McArdle (Replying to: eric) August 27, 2009 6:31 PM

And maybe you like silencing those you disagree with with outrageous accusations of horrific motives because you're too dim to come up with any rejoinder more sophisticated than "You are a pottyhead!" Maybe you have a size twelve ego stuffed into a size four soul, and enjoy unleashing your petty fits of juvenile righteousness upon people who have the temerity to not recognize the overwhelming genius of everything you say.

Or maybe you just lost your temper.

Which should I assume?
from her last word on guns.
I think I'm just going to pick out her comments from that thread today. Susan already beat me to one good one.

My favorite comment of hers from that thread: "There are many, many very permanent and effective ways to kill yourself, unfortunately."

As opposed to the temporary and ineffective ways to kill yourself.

When, ever, has anyone been "silenced" by an "outrageous accusation of horrific motives?"
The "death panels" are the fucking definition of "accusations of horrific motives," so why haven't reform proponents been "silenced?"

Megan's very best has been brought out by all this crap. In the two yrs. FMM's been paying attention, I can't remember her being this consistently offensive, confused & just plain desperate.

Heh, sorry about that. Fortunately there is A LOT more stupid.

Plus, she's used that insult before. Let me introduce her to Shakespeare Insult Generator, where I found "eat my knickers."

No worries, you get up much earlier than I do, so you tend to get the first crack.
I am a little jealous of all the credit you're gettin from people like aimai with nary a mention of our admittedly cruder efforts, I'll admit.
Damn you, tbogg.

The funny thing about that sentence is Megan could be describing herself to a tee, especially considering the otherwise tame and polite comment she was responding to. That was one seriously bitchy remark on her part.

Nownow, CP, let's not get crazy and credit Megan with a soul.

She has a soul. It may be black and filled with nothing but vain self-regard and a disinterest in the suffering of others, but it's there.

I think this is a metaphysical/religious disagreement. I don't believe in a soul as such, I think it's a somewhat useful name used to describe our ability to access the highest forms of human existence, not an actual thing. Megan has not developed her inner being in any way since middle school, if even then, so I consider her to be soulless.

Suppose we define "soul" in a non-religious context and say it's the combined emotional, intellectual, and psychological components of an individual. They're displayed by pursuits, choices, and behaviors. To say Megan is completely soulless is a disservice to people who believe there is always room to learn, grow, and improve and who work to do so. Megan is such a narcissist she doesn't believe she needs to do any of these things; it is something she has chosen. It is a deliberate shortcoming, not a handicap from birth that she can do nothing about.

Look at how many times over the years her bad spelling, grammar, pretentions and flat out ignorance on the subjects she writes about have been pointed out to her. Not just here - I'll accept the possibility that she doesn't read this blog much - but right in front of her face on her own site. Yet, in all of that time, her writing has not improved one lick. Not even the slightest. She still pulls all that crap on a daily basis, then makes excuses about her failings and accuses her critics of misogyny or being too dumb to understand. It's stunningly obtuse and arrogant, both of which are all too human. To say she doesn't have a soul gives her too much credit and none of the blame for her actions and beliefs.

Brad, aimai's been very encouraging and kind from the beginning; it's partially because of her support that I started posting regularly instead of sporadically.

CP, I can't imagine the mindset that lets anyone reject all criticism. Yes, she's unbelievable egotistical but she's also unbelievably indifferent to her professional reputation.

It must be the bubble thing? As long as she can point to some authority that approves of her, nothing else counts?

I don't mean to fault anyone, and I've intentionally not played blog politics and avoided publicizing our ranty output, I just feel a little like the red headed stepchild this week. Not that we aren't getting plenty of traffic n stuff.

Susan of Texas said...

No problem, I understand.

I get most of my referral traffic from you guys, unless I get a link. And I'm with you on blog politics. I believe it was the noted economics blogger Megan McArdle who said to just do a good job and let the rest take care of itself.

brad said...

You actually often outpace S,N! as our biggest referrer, too.

I actually agree, CP, I guess I was just being Meganish (unclear).
When I call Megan soulless, I mean she has failed to develop her inner, higher, self, not that she lacks the basic capacity inherent to being human to have done so. She still has a germ of a soul, I'd wager it's part of what makes it hard for her to sleep at night.
