I don't know how she does it

Every time I think I can no longer be shocked by something she does, she manages to find just another dimension of cruelty with which to express herself

The New York Times discovers cutting yourself only twenty years after my high school classmates. Stand by for this weekend's special report: Sometimes, Teenagers Drive Out into the Woods and Drink Too Much Beer.

Dear teenagers who cut themselves,

I know that cutting yourself provides grounding in a world so insane that up is down and left is purple, but there are more constructive ways to deal with depression. Next time you feel the urge to hurt yourself, find Megan McArdle; and hurt her instead.

Sincerely
Wow, this women really doesn't have any empathy at all, does she.

brad adds:

Since Megan ultimately has no topic but herself, we all know she has asthma. I knew a kid who died of asthma related problems when I was in the fifth grade. Therefore, any issues Megan faces are passe, and fodder for being made fun of.
Right?
(Don't worry, I won't. I have a soul.)

It's not just the lack of sensitivity, it's also the complete stupidity of the statement to start with. Never mind that it's appallingly NOT FUNNY, content or humor-wise, but the NYT article in no way implies the author believes they are writing on this subject for the first time. It merely states that experts have noted an increase in the number of adolescents doing it. It's supposed to give a general clinical definition of cutting because that's what good journalism does. It doesn't assume that the reader already knows all about it. But Megan knew some people in high school who did it, so that must mean everybody knows what it is, right? RIGHT?

It's just an excuse to insult the New York Times. It does follow Megan's template.

1. Mention some issue or another.
2. Tell how it relates to Megan.
3. $$$$$$$!!!

She'd enjoy it. She's not supposed to enjoy it. Gah, terrible visuals right now, where's my brain bleach and funnel?
